Sometimes, especially over the holidays, things don’t go quite as planned. This extended family session at the Wichita Mountains was no exception when the FOGGIEST weather I have still to this day ever experienced came upon us.
We were actually supposed to do this session at the top of Mount Scott, but the clouds were SO low that they closed off access to it. We quickly improvised and decided to do the session in one of the fields below.
If you have ever been to the refuge, you know that you can see for miles out there. That was not the case for us as the visibility was so low. (Literally there are mountains in the background of these photos).
By the end of the session, it was even worse! It was crazy because even though this session was 30 minutes, we were able to literally watch the clouds get lower and lower from the sky.
On any other day, we would have rescheduled this session. However, since it was so close to Thanksgiving and everyone had come in from out of town, this was the ONLY day to shoot.
Honestly, I am so glad we weren’t able to reschedule.
When we are forced to make a situation work, I personally think that makes some of the most unique and interesting photographs. How often can you say you were able to do an extended family session at the Wichita Mountains on the foggiest day that existed?
Even though I wouldn’t necessarily recommend doing a session with this low of visibility for safety reasons, the fact that this family was flexible and still managed to have a good time made it worth it.
