It was in the middle of November with just a slight chill. The leaves were in full swing with their bright orange, red, and yellow colors, blowing freely with every Oklahoma wind that passed. It was the perfect day to have a couple’s session at the Wichita Mountains.

Kayla and Bill are not only neighbors of mine, but also one of the sweetest couples. On military bases, it isn’t uncommon for people to work with their neighbors, as Bill and my husband Barron did. This is yet another reason why I believe the military community is so unique.

Transitioning into military life can be extremely odd at first. For example, when they are doing military training called “shelling”- which is when the troops are firing their missles/cannons/ who knows what (lol)- it sounds like a huge KABOOM in your house. This can go on for several hours, and sometimes carries over into the night. I know that was definitely one of the biggest things I had to adjust to living on base. Weirdly enough, I don’t even hear those most of the time. When I have company from out of state that stays with us, they have no idea what’s going on!

In addition to the shelling rounds, there is also a cannon that goes off (conveniently right by my house) at 06:30 in the morning and 17:00 in the evening. These are to acknowledge the beginning and end of the work day. Now, that one STILL will catch me off guard every now and then, especially since it is so close to our house.

Overall, I’m so thankful for this little community that allows me to meet people like the Lovewells. (yes, that’s really their last name) It makes me very excited to see where this journey continues to take us!
